As the founder of Brixly, I have been building things on the web for over a decade. I started in design and development, drifted into full-stack work and systems administration, and along the way had the chance to work with some of the biggest e-commerce brands out there. That stretch taught me a lot about hosting platforms and where most of them fall short.
2014 was the turning point. Our first child had just arrived and I decided it was time to stop building other people's products and start building my own. I went freelance with my wife's support and threw myself into the hosting industry – an industry I knew well from the customer side, and one I felt I could do better.
Finding good hosting for my own clients was harder than it should have been. The market was full of overpriced, unreliable services, and most of the independent providers worth knowing were either being acquired or struggling to scale.
There was a clear gap in the market for reseller-focused hosting that was actually fast, actually reliable and actually independent. I built our first server from scratch, worked with people I respected to tune the stack properly, and put it in front of paying customers.
Brixly has never been a one-person show. The team is the reason it works – a small group of people who care about getting the details right and who genuinely enjoy what they do.
From that first machine, we have grown into a platform hosting over 380,000 sites for customers in 136+ countries, on hardware in London, Germany and the USA. A lean team handles 6,500+ support tickets a month with response times we are proud of, which has translated into a lot of long-term customers and a wall of awards we don't really know what to do with.
Through everything – including the pandemic – the team and the customers have stuck with us. Brixly is now part of Enix, a small, independent UK hosting group, and we are still focused on the thing we started out doing: running good hosting for people who actually care about their hosting.
